Fluoride Treatments: The Benefits, Side Effects, & More

What is a fluoride treatment?

A fluoride treatment is the application of fluoride varnish on your teeth, usually after your cleaning. Thankfully, the fluoride that we offer at Parkway Family Dental comes in a variety of flavors and has less restrictions with what you can drink afterwards!

What are the benefits of fluoride treatments?

Fluoride treatments help strengthen tooth enamel, making it more resistant to decay caused by bacteria and acids in the mouth. Dr. Moosa believes the best form of treatment is no treatment at all! Applying fluoride during your hygiene visit can help stabilize the progression of cavities and make your teeth more resistant to future cavities.

Some more benefits of fluoride treatments include:

  • Strengthens enamel and helps protect teeth from decay
  • Helps prevent cavities by making teeth more resistant to acid and bacteria
  • Can repair early signs of weakened enamel before a cavity forms
  • Helps reduce tooth sensitivity over time
  • Adds extra protection, especially for patients with dry mouth, gum recession, braces, or frequent cavities
  • Quick, painless, and easy to add to a regular dental visit
  • A simple way to prevent bigger dental issues later

Are fluoride treatments safe?

Fluoride has been carefully researched and studied over the years, and is safe when used as directed. Dr. Moosa and his hygiene team at Parkway Family Dental will go over all the options with you at your next hygiene appointment!

Are there any side effects of fluoride treatments?

Instances such as dental fluorosis or nausea are few and far between as the dose has been controlled. Generally speaking, no significant amount of fluoride will have been ingested, minimizing those side effects.

How often should I get a fluoride treatment?

Everyone is different with the amount or need for fluoride. In general, you would benefit from a topical fluoride treatment every 4-6 months during your dental hygiene visit if you are at a moderate to high cavity risk. Dr. Moosa and his team at Parkway Family Dental will review all of your options and customize a plan to help prevent the progression of your cavities.
