A tooth extraction is a common dental procedure where a tooth is gently removed from its socket in the jawbone. Dr. Moosa and his team at Parkway Family Dental will go over all the steps behind removing and eventually replacing the tooth. Our ultimate goal is to create a healthy oral environment, thereby creating a healthy body.
Some reasons we may need to perform a tooth extraction is if the tooth is broken beyond repair, whether it be from trauma or a cavity, infection, or advanced gum disease. At Parkway Family Dental, we like to explore all options before recommending a tooth extraction, but sometimes that ends up being the best therapy.
Removing a tooth is generally not painful as Dr. Moosa will numb the area with local anesthetic. With local anesthetic, you won’t feel anything sharp but may still feel some pressure. If local isn’t enough, Dr. Moosa is able to provide oral conscious sedation or laughing gas, where you would be awake but not fully aware of what’s happening. Need to be fully sedated? Not a problem! Dr. Moosa works with trusted Dental Anesthesiologists to provide you with the highest care.
Generally speaking, most extractions can be completed within an hour or so. The exact timing of the extraction depends on the complexity of the case. More often than not, Dr. Moosa will recommend a Socket Graft right after the extraction. The goal with a Socket Graft is to preserve the amount of bone you have in the area for a future replacement. Dr. Moosa and the team at Parkway Family Dental will be able to review the options with you at your initial consultation appointment.
After a tooth extraction, it’s normal to experience mild swelling, light bleeding, and some discomfort for a few days. A blood clot will form at the extraction site, which is an important part of the healing process. Depending on whether or not you need stitches and what kind they are, you may need to return for a post op appointment to have them removed. Dr. Moosa and his team will provide detailed aftercare instructions, including how to manage symptoms, what to eat, and what to avoid to ensure proper healing.
Healing depends on the extent of the surgery and if you have any medical conditions. Generally speaking, initial healing will take several weeks at the gum level. Even after the gums have healed, the bone will take several months to finish healing. That is why we can’t perform any additional surgeries, such as implant placement, until after 3-4 months of healing.
